Tennessee school bans rainbows, other gay symbols

bialogue-group:

gaywrites:

The Southern Poverty Law Center is fighting for students at Hardin County High School in Tennessee who were banned from displaying support for LGBT rights in any way.

Isabella Nuzzo and other students were told by an assistant principal that they could not wear rainbows or any other symbols of gay rights because those symbols “advertise or promote sex.” Wait, what?

The group also said the assistant principal terminated a student organized “Week of Pride” event to show support for gay rights and threatened students with suspension, class failure and disqualification from graduations.

“I and many other students were really upset with the school for shutting down free speech about a topic I feel strongly about,” Nuzzo said in the release. “I love my gay friends and life is hard enough without being judged for who you are or for believing in equality.”

I hope SPLC takes this up with a lawsuit, because this is absurd. A rainbow signifies sex? Really? Not only does this perpetuate the flawed but repeated idea that sex is bad bad bad and should never be talked about at school, it likens LGBT rights to purely sexual matters. This deserves attention, and this school deserves a national reality check.

What complete idiots. Suggest everyone in that school take to wearing buttons that say Genesis 9:13 (I will set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be the sign of a covenant between me, and between the earth.)

That ought to fix the know-nothings. What are they going to do, ban Bible Verses in the heart of the Bible Belt?

Really and truely.  This is a fucking absurd charge.  Terrorism charges for Protesters, and the US government sinks lower and lower.

NYPD Raids Activists’ Homes Before Tomorrow’s Occupy Wall Street Protests

Today “there was definitely an upswing in law enforcement activity that seemed to fit the pattern of targeting what police might view as political residences,” said Gideon Oliver, the president of the New York Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, which offers legal to support to Occupy Wall Street. “They were asking what are your May Day plans, do you know who the leaders are—these are classic political surveillance questions.”

Oliver said the National Lawyer’s Guild is aware of at least five instances of NYPD paying activists visits, including one where the FBI was involved in questioning. (He wouldn’t elaborate.) We spoke to three of these activists. (click for full story)

Amnesty: Saudis held for year for intending to protest

verbalresistance:

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A year after the planned “Day of Rage” demonstration in Riyadh, at least six men are languishing in Saudi jail for their involvement in the event, Amnesty International said Friday.

The rights group said that it believed that five of the men had not been charged or tried in the year since their arrests.

Holding people for a year merely for intending to protest is completely unconscionable. But that is what it seems the Saudi authorities have been doing in the name of security,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s interim Mideast director.

“The fact that we have only just found out about four of these men gives us real concern that there are others swept up in arrests around the time of last year’s demonstrations who we are yet to find out about,” Luther said in a statement.

“It is time for the authorities to come clean about who is being held for acts of protest and on what basis.”

Anti-War Protesters Again Denied Permit For NATO Summit March
A judge on Thursday rejected a request from anti-war protesters to demonstrate during the NATO summit of world leaders in May, but organizers said they would protest anyway and hope to draw 10,000 people or more opposed to war in Afghanistan.

“I can say definitively we are marching on May 20. We will hold a peaceful protest,” leader Andy Thayer said. He said organizers would get together to decide whether to appeal to a higher court.

Anti-war protesters want to march on May 20 and frustrated by the city’s refusal to allow a march that day. Activists have warned there could be a confrontation such as that during the anti-Vietnam War protests at the Democratic convention in 1968, which has marred Chicago’s image ever since.
The judge’s ruling on Thursday agreed with the city of Chicago, which had earlier denied the permit after a hearing at which city officials said the march would clog traffic and over-tax police resources.
The city had granted protesters a permit to hold a virtually identical rally and march on the day before, May 19, which coincided with a scheduled G8 summit prior to the NATO meeting. But the G8 summit was shifted to Camp David, near Washington, and Chicago protesters asked to move their demonstration a day later.
“Common sense tells you the city said it had enough resources to approve our application for May 19, when it had two summits. Now they say they don’t have enough personnel. It totally defies logic,” Thayer said.
A city spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.

Medical Marijuana and HIV Meds Could Put a Defendant in Jail
AIDS activists who were arrested during a peaceful protest in Washington, DC, are speaking out against the U.S. Attorney’s new policy of drug-testing people charged with nonviolent crimes such as civil disobedience. Specifically, the attorney allows defendants to enter into a deferred prosecution agreement, meaning the charges will be dropped once they meet the conditions of the agreement—such as performing 32 hours of community service in DC and having three consecutive negative drug tests. The government does not take into consideration whether defendants have a prescription for medical marijuana or whether they take medications that may result in a false positive, as some HIV meds might do. Because of the drug testing requirement, at least two AIDS activists now face possible jail time and a criminal record for their nonviolent protest. They are asking the U.S. Attorney to drop the charges.  Click here for more.
