The Zuckerberg Tax →
The NYT on how the wealthy avoid paying taxes by borrowing tax free on their assets, and why it is unsustainable.
You will almost never find me quoting the Times on this blog. They are imperialist in perspective, repulsively pro-Israel, and due to budgetary restrictions they generally run things about 36 hours later than other international sources break them. Nonetheless, this is an interesting...

I recently found myself going over the countries...
It was obvous then and now, themajority of the countries involved (besides the US and UK) had nothing to gain from the fight. So it reasons to say that they must have had something else to gain, no?
It is a little bit disturbing to think of how easily a major power like the US (or the EU or any other body) can rapidly “purchase” a coalition, if it puts its mind to it.
Just a quick,...

Israeli forces clash with worshipers at Al-Aqsa →
verbalresistance:
JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces clashed with Palestinians in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Friday, exchanging a volley of tear gas and rocks.
Israeli troops entered the Haram al-Sharif (Noble Compound) after the Friday noon prayer, and fired tear and and sound grenades, causing confusion amongst the large crowds who worship at the holy site on Fridays, a...

This is critically important journalistic work… and I almost never say that:
Key Quotes:
“Take a big net, throw it out, catch as many fish as you can and see what we get,” one investigator, quoted by the AP, recalled Cohen saying.

In light of the death of Marie Colvin it seems more important to return to some of the background of what is going on in the region as a whole.
The last paragraph can be tossed, if you like, but the rest is quite good.

Malaria kills 1.2 million people every year, a finding that has implications for global efforts to eliminate the disease
Malaria kills twice as many people every year as formerly believed, taking 1.2 million lives and causing the deaths not only of babies but also older children and adults, according to research that overturns decades of assumptions about one of the world’s most lethal...

Energy wars!
MUMBAI, India—India has joined China in saying it will not cut back on oil imports from Iran, despite stiff new U.S. and European sanctions designed to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program.
“It is not possible for India to take any decision to reduce the import from Iran drastically because, after all, the countries which can provide the...

“We have no interest at all in interfering in Syria, even to provide safe corridors.” Amazing, isn’t it? When a country has a lot of oil, they get rapid Western “assistance.” When they don’t, and their people are bleeding… we don’t give a shit. Andrew

I would like to raise one question before getting to bed:

The United States' "case" against Hezbollah
The allegations span South American cocaine shipments, US-used car dealerships, money-laundering in West Africa, several money-exchange houses, and end up in a Lebanese bank.
In December the US justice department filed a civil claim [PDF] against certain assets both in Lebanon and in the United States in what is seen as the US government’s latest attack on Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia...
